Installing from my Download Files??

I have downloaded some files to my"desktop download" folder and now am trying to figure out how to install such as Wvdial program. There are others but once I know how to do do this , they shouldn';t be a problem. I have searched but have not found the tutorial yet, of course I've not reached the end of the internet yet either.

What is your distribution and where did you get these programs - what type are they? If these are precompiled binary packages, you would likely use your distribution's package management tools. If they are source code, they are likely tarballs (files ending in tar.gz or tar.bz2 or the like) and you usually 'tar xf FILE; cd DIR; ./configure; make; su; make install' as a generic template for an unpackaged install.
