Installing from external hard drive

I recently got my brothers old laptop and Id like to get rid of Windows and install Linux on it (I was thinking Ubuntu). The problem is theres no floppy drive or CD drive so I was wondering if its possible to use an external hard drive to install onto the computer?

Ive seen tutorials to install the OS onto a usb drive to take the OS with you but I havent been able to find one that installs the OS on the machine and allows me to remove the external drive.

Any help appreciated.
