installing from a usb cdrom/dvd drive

Hiya everybody

got a bit of an issue here.

my roommate decided he wanted to try my linux and as a result screwed it over big.

now here is what makes it even worse.

my note book (gateway m675prr) has a toasted cdrom drive
and doesnt support boot from usb.

is there a way to say use a floppy disk to boot but point to the usb dvd drive?

maybe a boot program that can point to the usb drive.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Yes you can, most distros support this type of installation. "Back in the day" you couldn't boot from CD drives, so the only way was to boot from a floppy and then point to the CD drive. The only hitch I think you'll have is getting the USB drive recognized by linux before it needs the files from the CD. Another option you could consider (if you have the extra hardware) is to place the ISO or files on some other computer and do a network install. I think most of the major distros also support this type of install as it's the most deployable on a large scale.

made the root and boot disk's with rawrite and mounted the iso image with the loopback device.

my note book has been rescued and a new LFS is being rebuilt as we speak
