Installing form the hard disk
 

My current partition is:

sda1 : /
sda2 : /iso
sda3 : /home
sda4 : free space 86GB
sda5 : swap

I have Fedora 14 installed. I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 from the hard disk. I copied the seven part iso to the /iso. I didn't create a directory in the /iso. I ran the md5sum on the seven parts and compared it with the md5sum that is provided on the website and they are all identical.

When I tried to install from the hard problem, the first thing is instead of sda1,2,3,5 I found the following options:

/dev/hda1
/dev/hda2
/dev/hda3
/dev/hda5

well, I selected /dev/hda2 and left the directory blank. The images can't be found. What am I doing wrong? And why is the difference between sda in the partition and hda in the installation?

The hda versus sda is all about which driver is used to access the disk drive. The hda notation indicates that the older IDE disk driver is being used. These days the SCSI disk driver is used on all disk drives. This causes them to be listed as sda instead of hda.

It sounds like you are running Fedora 14 and trying to run the CentOS installer from within the live Fedora environment. Is that correct?

What are the exact commands that you are using to start the installation?

I have installed Fedora from the live cd already. Now I'm trying to install CentOS from the hard drive. I burned the first iso as an image to a CD to boot from. At the boot prompt I typed linux askmethod then hard drive from the media options, which led me to the partition to choose and the directory on the partition which contains the ISOs.

The images can't be found so I'm directed back to the same screen to choose the partition and directory that the images are located at. The isos are on the /iso and they passed the md5sum and I also ran the linux mediacheck on the CD I burned and it passed.

I haven't used that method. Hopefully someone else will have some good ideas.

If you have a DVD writer then you only need one DVD to install CentOS. Just a thought.

Could it be a permission problem? Does the /iso has to be set in any specific way for this installation to work?

I am confused about your partition-layout. For me it seems impossible to be like that. You have no extended partition, but a logical. That is in my opinion not possible. Please post the output of fdisk -l, as root.

Regarding to your problem, may that be a filesystem issue? AFAIR the support for ext4 is experimental in CentOS 5.5, so if you formatted the /iso-partition with ext4 that may be your problem.

/iso is an ext4. sda4 is an extended partition. I will create an ext3 partition and see how it turns out. Thanks!

It worked.....thanks again. The new problem is Fedora 14 has disappeared from the GRUP menu. Any solution? I didn't remove the partitions I already had.......just created new partitions on the free space I had left on my hard drive and CentOS was install on one of these newly created partition.
