try this:
/etc/init.d/gdm restart
If that doesn't work, try this:
yum install gdm

no problem bro, GDM is a graphical login manager for gnome (works for other DE as well). When you switch on your computer and GDM is launched, there is a nice login screen that show you several users to choose and ask for a password to login to gnome. This is what GDM does. GDM launches the DE for the user selected. It's not mandatory though, startx should work as well.

do that:
http_proxy=http://yourproxy.org/ yum install gdm
You can also set your proxy in /etc/yum.conf or /etc/yum/yum.conf something like that I don't remember.
