Fedora Core 3 has a gui installer that automatically starts up when you press enter when the system has booted from the cd or dvd. If you don't press enter I think the installer automatically starts the gui after a short while (I know Mandrake does this, but I am not so sure about Fedora/Redhat).

Thanks but it seems that its dropping straight down to the command prompt without attempting to load up any apps. I suppose it is possible that the image I have burnt does not have the correct installer in the dvd root dir. This would be strange as it is an image of the download, the only difference is when burning the dvd i selected the "bootable" dvd option in nero. Does anyone know how to invoke the GUI installer manually?

When you say it jumps straight into the command line....

does it have the fedora logo, some text, some options with the function keys and boot: as the prompt?

if so that's the start of the install, just hit enter to invoke the GUI

No, it looks like vanilla dr-dos + cd rom drivers

Ok. This problem is caused by incorrectly burning the iso as bootable dvd rather than as an image dvd. Worth remembering! Thanks for your help anyway
