installing emacs on SuSE 9.3

I'm trying to install emacs 21.4 but somethings going wrong. AHH!!!

I type configure and something comes back bad. Heres the exact entry in the terminal

lross@linux:~/emacs-21.3> ./configure
loading cache ./config.cache
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

What do I do to fix this??

I may be wrong, but it looks like you're missing the gcc compiler. Run YaST and install the gcc compiler, then give it another go. SuSe does not install the gcc compiler by default.

You could save yourself time and effort by installing emacs (and gcc) using the software module in yast.
