upgrade! Using a 3 year old system won't aid you using new gear... 12.04 is out now, upgrade to that and I expect you'll find a lot of stuff works right off of the bat.

Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Type 'usage:' is not known on line 59 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.'

The error indicates there is an error in your /etc/apt/sources.list file.

Code:
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
However please read acid_kewpie's response: 9.04 is 3 years out of date, grab the current 12.04 here: http://ubuntu.com
