installing drivers

hello
i have never been on linux in my life untill about 5 minutes ago, now that thats out of the way

ok i have my box setup with a duel boot linux and win xp
i have no internet on the linux side, and my nvidia motherboard has
on-board lan requires me to install a driver i put the disk in and opend the folder with the driver in it (the file is 3c2000.tar.jz or something like that) and i read the readme and its still too advanced for me lol, can anyone here give me a rundown step by step on how to install this driver

What distro are you running?

tar.gz are zipped files , you need to unzip the contents into a folder.
tar -xvf filename will unzip it into the current folder.

ok i got the file unziped now if someone could tell me what folder lan drivers go into and if i have to prepare them that would be great

There is usually a README or INSTALL file in the extracted directory. Read that for information on how to install. Another suggestion if all fails would be to get a cheap network card with a via rhine or realtek chipset coz they work fine with Linux.
