installing debian

hi to everybody

i have chosen the quest of installing debian because i heard good about it and think i can learn something . i would like to ask you what parameters i should follow on the package installation (dselect) , which packages should i install (from a newbie point of view) i already spent hours carefully reading all the packages and still don't get it right at the end . i think that window maker is the default one for debian and i would like to stick just with it . but it looks like there's a lot of things missing like internet browsers and dialup configuration tools ( yesterday i manage to install a pppdialup configuration but when i configured it and tried the conection it said i had no prmission)
