installing cinnamon mint 20.3 on virtualbox on MacBook Air running High Sierra
High Sierra is a far as OS on my MBA will go. I created a virtual box and tried several times to download + install cinnamon mint 20.3. Every time I’ve run into 2 problems:
1) Mint tries to run - no file, doesn’t
2) Trying to install the downloaded .iso aborts - can’t open or read file.
I again downloaded a cinnamon distro (20.2), moved the completed download .iso to the desktop. When I click START on the virtualbox, it does not recognize / start the installation of the .iso.

What does it do?
Do other distros work right?
And btw mint 20.3 is out, may as well start with that iso... although you can upgrade from other version fine once you figure out how to install it....
You can not install in Vbox from an .iso file. You have to convert the .iso and write it out to a USB stick or a DVD. The USB stick or DVD will be bootable when done. .iso's are just a way of distributing large groups of files as one file.
You most certainly can! There is no need to write it to media first, you can mount the iso file with virtualbox, this is standard way of installing anything in virtualbox. Right click on the optical drive, choose a disk file...
If it isn't intuitive, then follow any tutorial ever for installing linux in virtualbox.
Thank you to all who tried to assist me. The whole things turns out to be more complicated (and non-intuitive) that I’m resigning, i.e., I’m abandoning the project.
