Installing Canon MX-860 wireless printer in Xubuntu

I've been running Xubuntu 9.04 for the past couple of months but have difficulty installing my Canon MX-860 wireless printer. Everything else works perfectly and connects wirelessly to internet. Since I run a couple of other Win based computers, printing from the Toshiba 1100 laptop hasn't been a problem. It would be an advantage.

I tried to install the latest Xubuntu distro on the Toshiba and it installed but could not connect to the wireless Atheros card.

Where should I start? get Distro 10.04 working first or try and install the printer with the existing distro?

Thanks

I went here --> http://www.openprinting.org/printers your printer isn't listed. This site is the standard place to look for supported printers. I suspect you will either have to write your own driver, or wait for someone else to write one.

Canon is not open source friendly.

An Antheros card should work out of the box. Open a console, run the command :

'ifconfig'
'iwconfig'
and

'lsmod' ( all commands with out quotes ), and post the results.

Xubuntu 10.04 connection problems

Cliff, I appreciate your suggestions. After much waiting I downloaded Xubuntu 10.04 and installed it. It runs with the following problems:

My wireless Atheros card connects to the router ( it tells me so)but the error message, "Can't find the server" appears so I can't connect to internet. It keeps requesting the password which I insert - to no effect.

When going to suspend mode the screen is covered with many vertical lines such that the raster almost obliterates the background. Its in some wierd screen mode.

After much experimenting I was finally able to save the results of the commands: lsmod, ifconfig, and iwconfig and save it to a usb drive. I hadn't done this before so the exercise was useful.

The file is saved as an Abiword file, so I apologize if the format is not correct for this forum, since I haven't tried to do this on this forum before. At looking at the choices, perhaps I can paste it: here goes.

Sorry that didn't work- can't paste a copy from XP.

Let me try in a follow up.

Ralph

Are you running DHCP ( your router assigning IP addresses ) or did you statically define an IP address?

Does the address
Quote:

10.42.44.1
make sense to you? This is a private class A address. The mask that is set is for a class C network.

installing MX-860 printer in Xubuntu

Yes, I am running DHCP in the router and always have when running the previous distro with no problems.

I did note the difference in IP addresses between the two installations but didn't know what to do about it. I now have 10.04 running but no connection the internet. I could always re install 9.04 as that seems trouble free.

Thanks for your observations.

Ralph

The question is, is this 10.42.44.1 valid for your router configuration? Most home routers are set up for class C addresses, example 192.168.0.x Some systems assign a IP address if DHCP fails. It may have nothing to do with the router configuration, and the result is fail to communicate.

Can you connect to your router and verify the range of IP addresses your server is set up to assign?

installing MX-860 printer in Xubuntu

I edited the wireless connection and suddenly was connected but not for long. There were great pauses in the computer and then it disconnected me, but I did look at the setup and the IP address had changed to something similar to what I had before i.e. addresses beginning with 192.etc. I didn't mark them down but I have not been able to connect since and I am beginning to think this old laptop is on its last legs.

I can't boot from disk to try a fresh install and some other strange things happen so I suggest no further troubleshooting on this problem.

Your help is much appreciated. I will probably be back to the forum with another laptop and fresh distro update.

Many thanks

Ralph
