Unfortunately I can't really help to Caldera 2.4
without system spec info, and what you did before the screen turned blank. But I can tell that you do have to partition the Hard Drive for Linux especially if you want to have another OS kept on there as well.
Here's a list of the things you might see when partitioning:
hda - primary master
hdb - primary slave
hdc - secondary master
hdd - secondary slave
If you see number at the end of one of the above, Eg.
hda5
This stands for the partition number 5 on the primary master drive.
