Installing AW Stats on VPS

I am totally new to the world of VPS and Linux. I'm trying to install AW Stats on our VPS, but I don't know how to get started and AW documentation was over my head.

What I have:
-an .exe file downloaded from AW stats - uploaded to my local computer and my VPS
-root access through putty.exe, also i have it through an SSL connection icon in my Plesk control panel.

I'm not sure of the next steps. I ran the .exe on my home computer, and told it to run even through I don't have perl. The folder system it created I moved to our server through the ftp.

AW documentation said to "download and extract" the AW stats package, the run script
I found this file, but don't know how to run it.

I think once I get everything installed, I can configure and such...but I'm a little lost. Can someone recommend some specific next steps, or point to another thread? I've been searching around linux bulletin board for a while, but having little luck getting the ball rolling here.

Thanks in advance...

Where did you get the .exe from? .exe's are usually meant to be executed on windows machines.
I'm a little lost whether you are actually running linux or what?
It seems like you are logging into your linux server through putty installed on a windows-machine?
What is the setup here? Also, which distribution linux are you running, suse, debian?
