Installing ATI drivers for X 4.3.0

I'm having major problems installing ATI's Radeon 9800 series drivers. I am running kernel 2.4.22 on my freshly installed Slackware 9.1. It has X 4.3.0 installed, I managed to check that.

This is the error I get when trying to install the driver.

root@alhorhan:~/linux# rpm -Uh --force fglrx-4.3.0-3.9.0.i386.rpm|less

Can someone give me a hand with this? I'm trying to run a 9800pro with this. Also, when I use the XF86Config wizard thing, I have to use the standard radeon driver there. Now when I do this, I get an error message when I "startx". Something like, device incompatible with driver type.

hmmm..Im a lil late on this..Not sure if you have allready got it to work or not. but on slackware you need to convert the rpms to .tgz the command would be rpm2tgz ????????.rpm, and also....I have heard that the only way to get the ati graphics driver to actually run with direct rendering enabled is by installing the 2.6 kernel....Maybe this will be of help, or maybe not, Just thought since no one posted back to you that I would... >.> : P

Try DRI. Open your xfre86config. At the top you have Load "glx". Under this write Load "dri". In device section you have probably device "vesa". Write device "ati". Save config. restart kde, or other x env. open console, write glxinfo, and check direct rendering at the top. Is it :yes, or :no?
