Installing ATI Drivers

I downloaded check.sh and ran it where i downloaded it /home/magus0216/ and tried to run check.sh and it gives me this error
=====================================================================
ATI Technologies
=====================================================================
Your possibly not running this script from the console
or maybe you simply dont have the console ownership.
Unable to determine XFree86 Version. Stopping now.

So I tried using su to get root and it gave me the same thing. Any suggestions?

If you are running Mandrake 10.1, you are probably running Xorg, not XFree86, so check.sh won't be able to find it.

I understand that the latest version of the ATI drivers does work fine with Xorg.

Well I got them to install but it said I need to build a custom kernel? I went through the config but I didnt know my refresh rate settings for my monitor so I had to abort and when I rebooted I got a nice command prompt . Is there a guide for n00bs for this stuff?
