installing applications
hi,
i downloaded firefox 2.0 on my slackware 11.0 which is .tar extension file and winamp which is a .rpm file... i need to know how do i install these softwares |
For Firefox and Slackware, you should really use the official packages from Slackware. You can find them here.
You shouldn't install rpm files in Slackware. Why don't you use any of the audio players that come with Slackware? |
If you can't get winamp to work, you should install XMMS. It's pretty much the same thing. I believe it's not being developed anymore, however, so you may also try something like beep media player or amarok.

xmms is part of Slackware 11.0.
That's why I recommended using an application that comes with Slackware. |
Hi Warun,
I'm assuming you are upgrading firefox from whatever is shipped with your slack distro, and have checked the uselpa link above? For Firefox, you are supposed to just unpack the tar archive to a new directory in the directory where you want it installed i.e. in whatever directory it is presently installed. See the tar manpage for how to do this (command = man tar). eg: tar -zxvf <fn> That's all there is. (It's not usually quite so trivial). PS: It may well be different on slack, but when I did this as root, the firefox 2.0.0.6 installed fine and worked, but for some reason I could not get themes or extensions to work. So, only just in case you happen to have the same problem: I found a good thread here that suggested to install firefox in my /home/user/ directory instead, which solved the problem. I also uninstalled the existing firefox first, just in case. If you do this, you'll want to save your /home/user/.mozilla/bookmarks.html file first, and copy it back after. regards.... andrew. |

Hi,
Yes, I hadn't checked uselpa's link to see what version they have the slackware package for. Since it is already 2.0.0.6, there's nothing to be gained using the generic 2.0.0.6 tarball package from the usual public firefox download page, and (as indicated) there may well be something to lose. regards.... andrew. |
