Question Installing apache and gcc...

hey

I have a ftp server installed on a nas which works quite well. I would like to able to stream video clips/ music files etc... so I got the impression that this would only be possible if I installed a weberver like apache. (please let me know if there is an easier way!!!) so I tried, following some online guides, and got an error trying to install apache. The error was missing gcc "compiler"?!

My question is: As I am a noob (can barely figure out how to go to root:/) is this possible for me to do or should I leave it be before I break something?

If possible can anyone guide me through this? Or is there an easy way to stream stuff from an ftp server?

GCC is the GNU C Compiler. In other words, a program that writes C code (what a program types) into "machine code" so the computer can understand it. It sounds as if you're missing this program, but you should be able to get it from your distro's repositories without any major issue.

As for if theres an easier way to go about it, im not sure. I dont THINK ftp is really a "streaming" style of service though, it's just there so you can transfer files. What is it that you're trying to stream to? another computer? a media hub, like a xbox360?
