Installing a temporary(?) file

I just downloaded grip and im having some difficulties. i moved the file from my downloads folder to the home directory...i think this made it a temporary file...it's now listed in the color red when i use the ls command. when i ran rpm -i under root, it said the file didn't exist. how do i change the rpm file so it will work?

this is the line concerning grip:
-rw------- 1 nate users 472933 2004-04-02 09:33 grip-3.0.7-1.i386.rpm

Khabi 04-02-2004 02:13 PM

Red is the default color RPMs and a few other filetypes such as .tar.gz :D http://rick.quepasa.net/scree.jpg So I doubt that has much to do with it.

A stupid question, but try using the full path to the rpm file. so something like rpm -Uvh /home/nate/grip-3.0.7-1.i386.rpm

natedogver31 04-02-2004 02:34 PM

well, i tried it with the full path here's the result:
linux:/ # rpm -Uvh /home/nate/grip-3.0.7-1.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libghttp is needed by grip-3.0.7-1
libghttp.so.1 is needed by grip-3.0.7-1

thats good it means you're on the right track :D Now you need to solve those dependencies. Go here http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2htm...mit=Search+... and download the version for your system and install it then install grip and you should be good.. hopefully :D

natedogver31 04-02-2004 03:01 PM

awesome, it worked and now it's installed!!! but now where in the heck is it, it didn't install into the directory i had the .rpm file in?

-nate

Khabi 04-02-2004 03:06 PM

Applications in linux install into certian directories by default. usually /usr/ or /usr/local/. I would say give this a quick read it'll shed some light on it. http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html

otherwise if you want to know where a program installed to you can try 'whereis appname' so it would be 'whereis grip'.
I'll bet its /usr/bin/grip :D

natedogver31 04-02-2004 05:05 PM

awesome!!!! you guys have been a great help..thanks a ton one parting question..what does the priority of a program refer to? for instance should i set the priority of my screen saver high or low?
