installing a program into linux

Hi. I wish to install a linux program that I have.
This program is not in any linux archive I have tried all.
I do not need to be asked what program or why I just need to know how to install a linux program into linux.
I have tried in the past and no one seemed to know.
If I cannot install a program into linux from a cd then linux will not work for me.
I do know must start at desktop from there I do not know.
All help would be appreciated.

it'll be possible, but you've not told us what it is, what format it's in or what distribution you're using, so I don't understand how you expect us to help you. There are plenty of example guides for installing from source (tar.gz) such as that found in our wiki and tutorial subsite.

Possible, but if the application is even sorta kinda a little bit popular it's not probable. Maybe if you told us what distribution you're using and what package you're trying to install, someone can point you to the right repo or maybe even a set of instructions already posted on the ARPANet somewhere.

You don't need to be asked? OK, I won't ask. May I please ask the following questions...

What format is the installer?
Is it a tarball (i.e., .tar, .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tgz extension)?
Is it an rpm package?
Is it a deb package?
Is it a binary that is installed with an install script?

Information, we want information.

Maybe you didn't provide enough information or maybe you abandoned your thread in the middle to start a new one for the exact same question.

installing a program into linux

I need to install into linux spring an AVM program. I have the program on cd from AVM and it is a tar.
It is to get my pci from AVM working which I need to get on line.
I have tried forums and help but all answers are given not for newbies but as for people who know what they are doing, not too much help for me as used to windows which is so easy.
An answer would need to be in steps not just go to whatever or wherever.

Again, you really need to provide actual information, not just descriptions. Who / what are AVM? What are the files you have? What are the actual names of the files?

The program is AVM Fritz a pci card that works in windows ok. Internet card.
The file for this is fcpci-suse93-3,11-07 tar.
In the info file states that was designed for suse but should work with most other linux programs.
If this is enough info can we get down as too how to install please.

Well packages direct from vendors like this often tend to be obsolete, broken and abnormally packaged, so can be horrible to install. assuming that you do indeed have a tar.gz package then the guide below is a great starting point. You'll probably find that once you have opened it up there will be an INSTALL file inside to give you any relevant specific information.

Not sure if it is relevant.
