Installing a different version of Apache/mod_perl, how?

I'm trying to install the CMS Bricolage in Redhat, it doesn't work with the Apace and mod_perl RPMs that are installed, so I need to install them from source, I've never installed a program from source before, so that's my first problem, . Just figuring out how to install a RPM from the Terminal took 45 minutes...

Is everything automated once you untar and do make install? Everything goes where it's supposed to be?

And do I really want two versions of Apace and mod_perl installed? Will the new install overwrite the old one automatically? Do I need to delete it myself? Are there any other packages that will need to be reconfigured to use them?

mod_python, mod_ssl, mod_auth_mysql, and mod_auth_pgsql all require the apache rpms (httpd). If I force uninstall httpd is it possible to re-link all of these to the new version of apache? Or would it be easier to just uninstall everything?
