Installing

I am complety new to Linux and have a few questions concering the loading from an umbunto 10.04 iso file burned to cd.

1. The installer says "no network interface detected" The network interface is on the motherboad. Why will it not detect it?
2. Do I have to go get a wirelesss card or can i use the one one the motherboard?
3.Will it have a driver on the disc?

3. you need to tell us at least the type of the motherboard if you really want to get an answer
2. depends on 3., but probably you do not need a wireless card.
1. depends on 3.

Probably because it lacks the required driver to recognize it and make it work correctly. The other possible choice would be your network card to be broken, but I don't think that's the case.

Why should you get an additional wireless card? First try to make the one on the motherboard work.

What driver and for what?
Time for more questions: :)
  • Why are you trying to install an older Ubuntu release? The latest version available is 12.04. I'm asking this because newer version implies newer kernel, which implies more hardware support especially if the hardware is recent. Ubuntu 10.04 was released in 2010 and, understandably, mostly supports 2010-era hardware.
  • Please understand that, in order to help you make your network interfaces work, we need to know at least what network interfaces they are (manufacturer, model etc.). Can you provide that kind of information?
Edit: whoops, too slow :)

here is a huge thread about it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9449490
and here is a short one: http://askubuntu.com/questions/16953...atheros-ar8152

Ubuntu 10.04 uses a 2.6.32 kernel. The driver for your network card (Atheros AR8152) is included in later kernels (since February 2010), so if you install 12.04 instead of 10.04 you will be able to use the network card.
