installed xmonad, not sure what to do

I installed xmonad 'sudo apt-get install xmonad' and rebooted my computer. I can apparently choose xmonad as a session and if I do that I get a desktop with absolutely nothing and no functionality, just seems dead. I went back to xfce as my session instead and now I have no panels. I can at least open a terminal and everything works fine, just no panels. Can anyone help me figure out what happened or what to do.
