First off, I'm VERY new to Linux. (migrating from Windows) So far, there are lots of things I like about it, but just as many things I dont like about it. For one, I installed the newest version of xmms and can't run the program because I have no idea where it installed! I installed the RPM via command line. It didnt place a "shortcut" in the "start menu". (Don't know the Linux terms for these....only Windows!)
i am having similar issues. i downloaded and installed in /usr/src/xmms-1.x.x but i keep getting an error about not finding or finding a bad 'c' compiler. i'm such a n00b i dont even know what an RPM is. i downloaded source code into /src dir. i also downloaded GCC as per advice i recieved on IRC. no luck as of yet. good luck man. if anyone out there can help ME please let me know.
If you're using KDE desktop (default in Mandrake) press ctrl+f2 and type 'xmms' in. It should start. Then you can open the tool for menu edition (menudrake?) and add it (as command to run just type 'xmms').
roggae: No, I haven't seen your post before I posted (less tan 15 sec difference). I recommend you not to compile it from source - you have it in RPM form (much easier to install) on one of your installation cds. You can use the graphical tool as heema suggests or open a console (terminal, konsole, xterm programs) type
su
you'll be asked for root password, type it
urpmi xmms
It'll ask you for the cds it needs to install xmms.
