Installed USB device (CDRW) can't run in runlevel 5

I added a usb external burner to my redhat 7.3. After reboot video kicks out before Xwindows loads. Changed the runlevel to runlevel 3. Been that way for a couple of weeks...I am a newbie and I have been researching the steps to recompile the kernel without usb support, can't find any documentation...(moved my burner to my windows 2000 box)...I will admit...concerned about recompiling...kind of scary! Thanks for your help!

Do you mean you have been researching how to recompile it WITH USB support? I have a USB mass storage device and I had to recompile a new kernel to gain support for it. I had to enable ISD-200 support and scsi disk support when I did 'make menuconfig'. I don't believe the default kernel that comes with RH7.3 will have USB support enabled, so you have to recompile a new kernel and make sure the option is enabled.

Instructions on recompiling can be found

I am not giving up on the burner just yet....

Thanks for your help. I temporarily moved the burner over to my windows machine for now, but I am not going to give up. The recompiling of the kernel steps make sense and I have read through them several times however after the 'make clean' command I get the

make: *** No rule to make target `clean'. Stop.

The kernel is located at /usr/src/redhat on my machine. Still new to this!
