installed Ubuntu server from USB, now need to add package

Hello,

Welcome to my first post on this forum. Thank you for reading it.

I have a machine with no CD drive, so I made a USB install disk from the ISO of Ubuntu server 9.x. During install I declined to install any additional packages.

I need to install wvdial to get my network going. I need to either use the USB drive as the source for apt-get, or be able to navigate to the wvdial installer on the usb drive and install it.

I am on a server install with only command prompt.

Advice?

Thanks,

-Steve

You have a package manager for Ubuntu. You can use it to install the packages you want.

Just fire

sudo apt-get install <package-name>

sudo apt-get install wvdial

If you are logging in as normal user it will ask for your password.
If you are already root then you can omit sudo.

apt source

Hello,

Thank you for responding.

Unfortunately, when I try to apt-get anything, the server tries to connect to the Internet and download packages. I am trying to install wvdial in order to get Internet access, so I am sort of stuck.

I need to be able to either point apt to the USB stick as a source, or manually navigate to the package on the USB stick and run the installer.

well, you could either reinstall
OR
maybe you could boot up the usb again, apt-get the pkgs without installing them...

OR
go here
get the pkgs while running liveusb and transfer to your hd setup and install from there

Copy the iso to your HD
Then
Code:
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop ubuntu_install.iso /cdrom
sudo apt-cdrom -m -d /cdrom add
Then
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wvdial

So your machine currently have no active internet connection.right?

Then either you need to connect through a LAN gateway or go to another system with an internet connection and browse http://packages.ubuntu.com and download the packages you need. Then copy it to a USB drive and install onto your machine
