Installed Ubuntu 10.4 now Win7 is gone.
 

Name is Paul very pleased to meet ya'all.
I know the subject is not real discriptive but wasn't sure how to explain it.
I am very fond of Ubuntu and I know it wasn't the cause of me loosing win sys. Wiped win seven off by bighting off more than I could chew.
I deleted all the partitions even the recovery one.
I still have Ubunta on ther and it works but I can't get online untill I install a wireless driver. But any thing I try to install from a cd or flash drive it says an error occured while loading the archive?
When I try to boot from a Vista cd I have for my other systems it says boot manager missing. No error number Just a box below with a lot of things typed in there.
I can't get into the setup cause another person owned owned it and had it all apart an asked my son Mark who has a small Dell business in WV if he wanted it before he trashed it. Mark put it together and gave it to me with no keyboard but TG for USB. But we don't know the Setup password?
I'm just interest in getting Vista on it because I have the DVD.
I think I really bombed this one but I hope to get better as time goes by,,,,My health is not good so it may be a few days , Lord only knows when I'll get back to read about ya'all cussing me out

BIOS password...

I understand that you can't get into the BIOS, but have you tried to clear the BIOS password. This is possible with some motherboards; there are many posts on the Internet.

If you know what you packages you need for your wirelesss card and can get to an Internet for a download, you could make a persistent Ubuntu USB flash drive and add the needed packages, then install it.

If this system had Windows 7 installed on it, it still has a valid license and you can re-install Windows 7 using a downloaded DVD. You will need the activation code.

is that ubuntu 10.04? if it's not the server edition, it is end-of-life. full stop. you won't be able to install software. please install the newest *buntu 14.04 LTS (long term support) - if your hardware is a bit dated, go for xubuntu or lubuntu, ubuntu might be too heavy.

What kind of driver file do you have? Does it have a .exe file extension? Linux doesn't run EXEs, those are Windows programs. Ubuntu usually tries to open them with its archive manager, and since the EXE isn't an archive, it gives an error.

Does the wins 7 have the product key on it. Does the manufacturer still have recovery cd's/dvd's

The easiest way I've found to clear the BIOS password is:
1. Unplug the computer from all power.
2. Carefully remove the battery from the motherboard (It looks like a giant watch battery).
3. Let it set a couple of days.
4. Carefully reinstall the battery in the motherboard.
5. Reinstall windows.
6. Install your Linux distro of choice.

If you wiped wins 7 & recovery partition then what makes you think that vista can boot a newer machine? your best bet would be to download the wins 7 dvd that matches the system that was originally installed using your original wins 7 product key code. If it doesn't work call microsoft & they will help with activation.

I assume you did an install from dvd and on reboot got this issue. It is because linux took over with a different loader maybe and the windows install didn't fix it automatically.
