Installed Mint successfully, but it won't boot

OK, I just successfully installed Mint 18.1 from DVD iso to formatted HD yesterday. Played around with it a bit and it seemed to work fine. Today tho, it won't boot. (error 1962 repeating boot sequence)

The HD is definitely in the boot sequence. I even tried putting it first to see if that made a difference.

I double-checked the HD jumpers to make sure it's in master mode.

Seems like it should fire right up. I feel like I'm missing something simple. Any and all tips/ideas appreciated.

When you got to the point of the install where it asked you to install GRUB, where did you tell it to install GRUB?

What is the last thing, you see when the computer boots Mint?

Did you happen to install a new kernel on this brand-new system?

ok, it is offtopic, but that install was not successful at all.
Or probably: did you try to boot it earlier (and was that really successful?)
Would be nice to explain:
1: what is really happening
2: exactly what did you install and how? (including grub config)
error 1962: this means you most probably missed grub

Don't remember GRUB, but I chose the default choices on most everything on the install. This sounds like something that could be key. I will read up.

I didn't see this in the install instructions, but if this will make the HD bootable, it sounds like a key thing. I will read up.

I did get the "Installation Successful" notice at the end of my install. I don't remember GRUB, but you're right--it's not very successful if it won't boot.

I am reading up on GRUB as we speak.

Information that would help which you have not posted:

Is the Mint the only operating system on the computer?
If not, what else do you have?
If it is the only system, is your computer new enough to use UEFI and if so did you install using UEFI or the older MBR?
On an MBR system, the default is to install to the MBR which is: device for bootloader installation: /dev/sda
On an EFI system, it would install files to a FAT32 partition at the beginning of the disk. You could boot the Mint DVD and open a terminal and run the following command to list device/partition information:

Code:
sudo fdisk -l
(Lower case Letter L in the command)

If you get a complaint with that output relating to GPT, use gdisk -l and post the output here.

The original computer was Lenovo with Windows 8.

I took an old HD, formatted it, and replaced the one in the Lenovo with it, then installed Mint Cinnamon 18.1 (64 bit) from DVD iso. (The install went great, but it won't boot.)

So, it is the only OS, and I think it's new enough to run it w/o a problem. You lost me a little on the rest, but it sounds like critical stuff, so I'll be reading up again.

Thank you all, btw, for all the good info.

OK, from my readings, it looks like I need to do something to make the HD bootable (which I apparently should've done before I installed mint).

Is there maybe some way to do this without reformatting and reinstalling Mint, or do I need to start over?

I'd boot from the mint media and select "rescue". Open a root shell on your "/" partition, and reinstall grub to the MBR. Then it should boot.

You can get more detailed information on your system to post here by using the Mint DVD and going to the link below and using the instructions to add the ppa to download boot repair. The instructions are specific to Ubuntu but should work on the Mint DVD. After downloading it, you should be able to just open a terminal on Mint and type in: boot-repair When it opens, select the option to Create BootInfo Summary. When it finishes, you should get a link which you can post here. That will give us enough information on your drive(s)/partitions and boot files.

OK, I booted from the mint dvd planning to do the boot repair/rescue thing.

I'm trying to find the partition ID so I can put it in the command, but I can't find the HD itself. I used: sudo fdisc -l (thanks yancek) in the terminal to view the disks on the computer, but the HD doesn't show. Nothing in the list over 2 Gig. It seems to be whirring and getting warm, so I think it's working ok, but just not showing for some reason.

Thanks again for the help. No cigar yet, but I feel like I'm getting somewhere. I will try again tomorrow.
