installed gnome for debian, now dns isnt working?!

i installed gnome because i got my hands on a gig of ram for this 6 year old pc im running debian on.
after install, i wanted to install VNC server, which is all well and good, but when debian went to look for the packages, it couldnt resolve
i cant ping either...
i CAN ping ip addresses so i immediately checked my DNS... its fine.
so i modified /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf with openDNS addresses.
still no joy..
ideas? i havent even played with gnome yet.. i want to have fun but i must figure this out first.
