installed fedora, display garbled after launching some apps
 

I just recently installed Fedora Core 1, everything looks fine, works fine (somewhat). Very newbie here.

Problem is, the display is ok, so long as I do *not* run apps and whatever. For example, launching, say, OpenOffice causes a lot of 'trails' left over around the screen, like footprints - this is caused by the window borders.

When logging out, the whole screen goes garbled. And hangs.

In another situation, the screen saver came on and played havoc with the screen - a lot of lines and some flashes.

I can activate my lcd's menu, and that doesn't get affected - so I'm thinking maybe it's the graphic card, monitor drivers, or with x? I haven't installed any specific drivers yet...

Hardware:
- Aopen GeForce 4 MX440SE (running in 4x AGP) 64mb
- Samsung SyncMaster 152T (LCD panel) @ 1024x768, 60Hz.
*** The display setting driver is "LCD Panel 1024x768". Connected to graphic card via analog cable (standard vga one... card has no dvi output unfortunately)

Refresh rate seems to be in ok range - it just garbles up if I do *something*, nothing goes wrong when I just leave the system alone (that's NOT how a system should be used....)
Please assist as possible - I haven't found a similar prob in the forums.

Increase video RAM to maximum from BIOS
I think that will sort out things

I used the NVidia Drivers on my old laptop with Fedora Core 1. They worked fine for me. If the other suggestion doesn't work, then try them.

I don't see any setting similar to that, other than "AGP Aperture" and "Video Rom Shadow". Did you mean one of these?

I think he meant the AGP Aperture Size. That should be fine so long as you have a good amount of RAM on your system. I've disabled the Video BIOS shadow pretty much on every board I've ever owned. As far as I know it's an legacy setting which is seldom used now. Not too sure about what exactly it does, but it was recommended to me to disable it long ago.

You may also want to check the Vertical and Horizontal refresh rates of your card. I've cleaned up graphics on X on a few systems by getting the exact values and putting them in the XConfig. That may help as well.

Whoops... I mean the Horizontal and Vertical rates of your monitor(s). Sorry about that.

I have the exact same video card (NVIDIA GForceMX 440 64 MB 8XAGP), and here's your solution-
Go to www.nvidia.com, and Click on download drivers. Then select Linux/Open Source link, and download the newest driver file (the one with the highest end number). Then, follow the instructions that they have on that same page (follow the link), and you will get much better performance from your card!

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm still dealing with it.

The AGP Aperture to max seems to make my Windows run slower, I dunno...

As for Fedora, I reinstalled it again - and now it seems the display works! My LCD panel's menu is reporting that the same refresh values are there (as with in Windows) ... Haven't tested for longer periods, but so far no garbling (there such a word?) is happening after Emacs/OpenOffice is open.

I'll test those drivers, once I get past the config jitters :D Thanks anyway!
