Installed driver for graphics card, now it boots directly to terminal

Finished installing Ubuntu 10.10 in my XPS15, intel i5 4g ram, nvidia GT 420M graphics card,

problem is when i go to additional drivers, the driver listed (Nvidia accelerated graphics) when I install it and reboot it the computer starts on the terminal, no graphic interface. All I get is the black screen asking me login and password, when I enter them, just get the terminal prompt in a black screen.

Any solutions are appreciated. Thank you.

Try entering the command "startx" after logging in. This should start xwindows and get things back to normal.

you can try

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

but you may have to manually configure xorg.conf in /etc/X11 or install your drives from nvidia

i restored to original drivers (not nvidia) and problem went away. I think I will keep it this way, as I have seen several threads with problems with NVIDIA drivers for the 420
