Installed driver for graphics card, now it boots directly to terminal
Finished installing Ubuntu 10.10 in my XPS15, intel i5 4g ram, nvidia GT 420M graphics card,
problem is when i go to additional drivers, the driver listed (Nvidia accelerated graphics) when I install it and reboot it the computer starts on the terminal, no graphic interface. All I get is the black screen asking me login and password, when I enter them, just get the terminal prompt in a black screen. Any solutions are appreciated. Thank you. |
Try entering the command "startx" after logging in. This should start xwindows and get things back to normal.

you can try
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but you may have to manually configure xorg.conf in /etc/X11 or install your drives from nvidia |
i restored to original drivers (not nvidia) and problem went away. I think I will keep it this way, as I have seen several threads with problems with NVIDIA drivers for the 420
