installed Core5 but unable to FTP to it WEB is OK

Installed Core 5.
Set up a client email account all OK,
Can see WEB OK,
Can see other (windows) computers on the LAN
BUT
I can not FTP to it
I can not SSH to it.

I set its LAN address to 192.168.1.16
and created a user fred with PW say qwerty123.

When I try to FTP to 192.168.1.16 with user name fred and PW qwerty123
It just fails to connect.
(I have tried disabling the firewall)

Likewise SSH - can not connect so no chance to enter a username

As I am a novice at Linux it may be something blindingly obvious.

I have RHEL4 at the office. I can access it using SFTP, but not FTP. I believe that one has to specifically install FTP but, since SFTP works fine, I have not bothered.

Its possible you also need to specifically install SSH--or maybe just activate it??

ok... it's vsftpd right? what error are you getting, can't connect at all, or cannot login, that's two different things, vsftpd has local_enable set to no by default.

(from manpage : local_enable
Controls whether local logins are permitted or not. If enabled, normal user accounts in /etc/passwd may be used to log in.)
Check your config file and have a look at vsftpd.conf manpage.

From where you are trying to connect - from a computer on the same LAN, or not?

Thanks for your interest folks.
It is now working OK, it was a silly mistake of mine.
Where I thought I has set the static IP address to 192.168.1.16 - something must have gone wrong because it was not set.
But thanks anyway
Victor
