I am having trouble installing ubuntu on my dell laptop, I put a new hard drive in it and was going to switch to linux. But every time i tried to install ubuntu I get

What should I do?? I have been using a cd from ubuntu.

This type of error is often caused by the kernel not having support for the file system loaded for the boot and or root partitions.

Did you create a new partition and select a supported file system? What did you choose?

It can also be created if you do not set up to boot loaded correctly, ie it points to the wrong partition.

Before you tried to install, did you have free disk space? By this I mean, space not already in another partition?

Are you trying to create a dual boot system? Is windoze installed and working?

No this a brand new hard drive, I tried before and I went through the installation process with a cd I downloaded from there website and when i start the computer it comes to the grub menu and when i select ubuntu it goes to a blank screen with a blinking cursor. So i bought a cd from them thinking I had a corrupted image but know all i get is this kernel panic.

In the Allocate Drive Space window did you select your drive, create a partition, select a filesystem type and format the partition?
How old/new is the computer? Hardware specs?
