installation problem: no passwd accepted

Here look:

Installed to dual-boot with XP Prof. on a castoff notebook with an old RedHat 7.1 disk. Got as far as the prompt from NT asking which OS to boot and when I opt for Linux the login and passwd screen blinks on and off, on and off till this:

"INIT: Id "X" respawning too fast. Disabled for 5 minutes."

Then shortly the login screen stabilizes to this:

"Release 7.1
Kernel 2.4.2-2 on i686"

It accepts a login name
but will not accept (ie. cursor doesn't move) a password.

It took me so long to get this far (as if it took me all day to get my pants on) and I'm would like some advice as to whether to persist or abort my limited but instructive efforts.

What do you think?

Oh the cursor never moves for password login on linux, it's so people can't watch you type it and know how many letters it is. It's for security, even in term emulation it does the same, such as if I wanted to go to root user:

mrshroom@debian:~$ su
Password:
debian:/home/mrshroom#

That's all you will see, no ****** for password, the cursor just stays white till I hit enter.

So really you must always remember your password, and get used to not being able to count how many letters you have typed... ;) haha

Also, that is seriously old/unsupported:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Linux
You'd be much better off with a current release eg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_...ting_system%29 (v11) or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centos (v5.3)
