Installation problem
 

Hello all,

Just got some new hardware, nothing fancy, rather cheap actually.
Here's what I got...

BIOSTAR A780L3G AMD 780 AM3 SOCKET MOTHERBOARD
AMD PHENOM II X6 1035T THUBAN 2.6GHZ
Patriot Gamer 2 4GB DDR3 PC10666 1333MHz
Seagate 500GB SATA HD 7200/16MB/SATA-6G
Lite ON 24X DVD-RW SATA

Here's the problem.... First I wanted to give Fedora16 a try, downloaded the 64 bit DVD install iso. Burned it to a DVD and went for an install. Boot up the installer comes up, I click Install, then nothing...other than a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. Went over everything again, tried it again....same result. I then tried the Ubuntu 32bit DVD I had already used on another system....same result. I've tried Fedora16 64bit DVD, Fedora16 64bit live, Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and 64bit DVD's and the latest OpenSuse 64bit DVD. All with the same result. The one thing that is common to all these tries, when I click on install the DVD drive light blinks in a rhythmic fashion for a few seconds then it stops and the blinking cursor begins.

For the heck of it I grabbed a WinXP pro disc and gave it a try....Complete install in about 40 minutes.

The hardware all seems to work, but I want this to be a Linux box.

And the questions....

Any ideas on what could be the problem?
Possible BIOS issue?
Hardware incompatibility?
Where to begin.....

Have you checked the md5sums of the iso files that you downloaded? Have you also checked the md5sums of the install CDs / DVDs that you have made to be sure that the install discs are not corrupted?

If the md5sums check out ok, are you able to run any linux live CDs on your system?

Post the output of lspci -v so that everyone can know what hardware you are working with.

I checked the md5sums on the Fedora16_64bit and the Ubuntu 11.10_32bit. Tried the Fedora Live, can't get to where I can run a command.

This morning I swapped out the SATA DVD drive with an IDE drive, same result.
Then swapped out the SATA HD with an IDE HD, same result.

The only things I did not change are the mobo and memory...If I had more memory, I'd swap that too.

I'm thinking, for what ever reason, this mobo just doesn't like Linux.

Are you using a USB keyboard? I've had problems on new installs with some bios in that they expect a PS/2 keyborad, once booted USB keyboard is OK.

Some BIOS (Pheonix?) also have a LINUX/WINDOWS option obviously set for Linux

after that turn off APCI in the BIOS just in case, once you are up and running it can be turned back on.

Tried both USB and PS2 keyboards. Tried several different options in the BIOS,all with no luck.
At this point I have spent about 10 hours on this, it's not worth any more time. I'm giving up on this mobo, I got an RMA form the vendor and ordered a different board.
