installation help

i'm very new to linux, I just thought i'd give it a try and see how it does. I have rehat 9 and its on 3 discs. I know some things about computers but with linux i'm lost. I have set the partition to 10000 megabites instead of using it all so I can install another os on the rest of it. the install works fine through all the discs except it can't find my graphics card. (I have a nvidia fx 5200 with 256 mb on the card) I chose a generic one at the end of setup and then it said an error and asked me to record it and send a code in. then ti told me to reboot so I did.. and it comes to a login screen in text asking for a local host login (or login) and then a password. during setup , I was asked for a root password which I remember however it didn't ask for a username. now that i'm at this screen I can't get past it.. I dont' knwo the username because it never prompted me to choose. I knwo the rootpassword but it helps none. what do I do?

Have you tried typing " root " as the login?

The user name for the password you typed in during install is root. You may want to try something a bit more recent than RH9, as it's fairly old and out of support. You should be able to find drivers for your card on nVidia's Web site.
