Doing this as a fresh install on top of prior installations, i.e., telling computer to not save any past installation and overwrite all files.
Any ideas?

I have recently tried install a Mint 12 in one of the units I don't remember I was challenge the same question of "Who Are You?".
Where did you get your iso/dvd copy?
Or when the installation initiates you are asked for a user name and a password: that moment you should give both and note it down else by reboot if you forgot you wouldn't be able to login. Take note that Mint doesn't offer convenience of "root" login: you have to login first as a regular user and issue "sudo" to perform root actions.
Go try again and check if it works.
Hope that helps.
