Alright I've successfully installed rh9 on my 80gb drive but I seem to have one last problem. When I rebooted following the completion of the installation process, I was only given the option to boot into Win2k, redhat didn't show up. So I disabled the 120gb drive, and now when I try to boot with the 80gb, it says error loading operating system. How do I make it so I have the option to boot into either OS? By the way I'm using the LILO boot loader.

Hi Scoughlin

Just to double check with you - so youve got :

120 gig Win2k on Primary Master - /dev/hda - (your 1st hard drive)?

80 gig Red Hat 9 on Primary Slave - /dev/hdb - (your 2nd hard drive)?

You installled Win2k First?
You installed Red Hat second?

When installing Red Hat you chose to install LILO to the MBR?

Are all these points correct?

When you re-booted and only saw the option for Win2k was that fron the LILO boot menu?

Yes that is all correct, however when I booted I didn't see the LILO boot loader I saw the normal windows options of Win2k and WinXP (which is no longer installed yet comes up for some reason).

Hi Scoughlin

Was it the NTLDR that came up when you booted up?

Did you make a Red Hat 9 bootdisk?

scoughlin 07-27-2003 08:04 PM

When I attempted to boot using the 80gb drive, it simply says "Error loading operating system". I created a boot disk, attempted to boot with it, and the system restarts itself after loading a couple things. I also tried booting from the cd and typing linux rescue which is supposed to find the OS and make it usable, it found redhat and said it was mounted, and told me to reboot. After rebooting, I still got the same error.

Hi Scoughlin

Just as a matter of interest - you havent got Powerquests Boot Magic installed anywhere? - this could cause problems.

When you boot from your Red HAT boot disk does this occur?

You should first come to a prompt which says

Boot :

Just press enter when it comes up

The kernel image wil load from the floppy into memory and take over the rest of the boot process.

It should then load up to the Red Hat login screen - login

Does all this occur/can you do this?

If so: when your loged in do:

Open a Terminal :

type "su" press enter
type your Root password then press enter

type

vi /etc/lilo.conf

copy your lilo.conf file and post it so I can have a look at it.

When I boot from the redhat boot disk, I do infact get to the boot prompt and I press enter, and it loads vmlinuz and inftrd.img and then restarts the computer immediately after. I don't have that program installed that you mentioned. I wonder if it would be of any use to reinstall linux, maybe something went wrong during the installation process.

I booted from the install cd to see where it put redhat since it obviously wasn't where I thought. It said linux was installed on /dev/hdb3. The boot floppy tries to load /dev/hda2, which seems a little odd.
