Installation does not proceed, Help!!!
Hello everyone,
I'm the greenest newbie and as such, I possess problems. I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my Dell Latitude CPx650 laptop (6GB HDD, 256MB memory, 650 MHz P3 pentium, XP Pro OS) and I can only get to the first image, where it reads UBUNTU and has a bar that goes back and forth. After that, I get a black screen and then a message that reads [202596000] buffer I/O error on device fd0 logical block 0 A few minutes later I get 304.192000 hdc: drive not ready for command I don't know where to start with this, but I'm willing to learn and to support the Linux community by using and spreading the use of the programs. |
304.192000 hdc: drive not ready for command
I've had this once. I cant remember the solution, but I remember somewhere out there on the great web, someone suggested to turn off DMA in the BIOS. |
fd0 is the floppy. Are you using a boot floppy? Have you tried your installation media on a different PC? Did you check the MD5 on the media (assuming that you downloaded it)?

Thanks Larkl, I'm trying to boot from the installation CD. I changed the booting sequence to CD first, then drive C, last the floppy. I also tried to get the computer to boot from the CD alone, to no avail. I also tried to change the ATA controller device 0 to DMA, then to PIO, also to no avail. I know that this computer had Windows 98 until I had Windows XP Pro installed. The file system was changed from FAT to NTFS in order to load XP. The hard drive is small, just 6 GB. I'm trying to install UBUNTU alone and delete XP.

I have not tried the media on another PC, but I have two disks that came from the same source and both do the same. I also tried to install Freespire and it did the same. I just get to the first two screens and then the installation stops, giving me the error messages.
Thanks for your help |
