Install XP after Redhat 7.3?
 

Hi All,

I have an older Compaq Presario Laptop- AMD 533 Mhz, 192 RAM- 6 gig HD- which is broken up into 2 drives- regular c: and then d: which is a 'system save' drive.

Was running Win 98 SE- (which BTW Compaq does not give you the Windows Disk- they just give you some 'restore' disk that reads your d: drive)

Anyway, I was a bit hasty and installed RedHat 7.3 by deleting all partitions. System boots up fine in Redhat and I was happy w/ the whole thing.

Problem is, my wife was not very impressed. Apparently, she had already told me that she needs the laptop b/c she likes to use Word.

So, I don't know much about reconfiguring the machine and wanted to get some advice. What would you do? I don't have the Win 98 disk, but I do have a Win XP pro disk. I do want to mess w/ Redhat too. Can I have a dual boot w/ XP and Redhat on such a small hard drive? And if so, what would the best route be to do it?

You could make a windows partition (fat32,ntfs) from your linux partition, if you installed red hat to one...

You could say, make your windows partition maybe 1gb-1.5gb, the rest could be for Red Hat, then you could install XP, i'm not sure if installing XP would go over the MBR (master boot record) i'm sure it would though, but gettin lilo or grub back up (depending on what you used) should'nt be a problem, as long as you have your bootdisk it will be ok, if you have problems post them up here, i know this was very short but i'm actually quite sleepy...

Oh and also, if you don't wish to install XP JUST because your wife needs word, there are alternates, some very good ones are Open Office www.openoffice.org or abiword (seacrh for it at www.google.com/linux)

Both these support the file extensions of .doc (same as windows)

This would be easier if you don't wish to install XP partition etc. etc.
