did you do a "full" install? i havent used fedora in a while, but i believe you ahve to install the development packages for a c compiler and all that. also, you should realy get the rpm for fedora that you are using. this will eliminate the need for the c compiler, and also eliminate the library problems that are common in installing source on rpm based systems.
anyway, you should be able to get the packages you need off of the fedora cds. look for development, or just the pkg name, gcc, or cc,
