Install Ubuntu

I have posted before on the trouble I am having with Ubuntu. I short I created a second Ubuntu VM in my Virtual Box and it seems to be a good installation. However I can see on desktop an icon: Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

So, when I try to click on it, it takes me on a path where it asks if I want to "Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu?" or "Something Else"

What disk is it talking about and what does it want to erase?

I am scared to let it go beyond that window, so I back off.

And in fact I feel I do have an installed Ubuntu already with all attributes, including the Terminal, Thunderbird, etc.

I want it all gets explained.

Thanks, - Alex

You have two instances of Ubuntu 12.04 created in VirtualBox, is that correct? Any particular reason for that?
If in fact you are booted in VirtualBox, when you start it you need to set the size and it probably needs to be 6GB or more for Ubuntu. Your best choice is Something Else so you can see what is happening. The Erase Disk is pretty much an automatic install and you won't see much of anything happening behind the scene. If something goes wrong, you won't have a clue as to what it is.

If you booted an iso file of Ubuntu in VirtualBox, you are running it as a Live CD so you won't be able to make any permanent changes. If you want that, just ignore the install and use it. If you want Ubuntu installed in VirtualBox, use the 'Something Else' option. When you get to the 'Allocate Drive Space' window, you should see no partitions and you will need to create them. If you haven't created a VM large enough, you should get a message and the install will fail.

Thank you. I have two Ubuntu VM now because when I start the first VM (I worked with it for about 6 weeks, installed a lot of software, etc.) it freezes my host OS (Windows 7). The mouse cursor gets stuck and I am unable to move it. I have to crush the machine by physically pressing the start button and do it all over again (booting Windows 7). I tried many tricks but eventually found that none worked and I had to create another VM. I may end up destroying the first one soon.

Your explanations are very helpful and I will follow them. I have 16 GB of RAM and can install more if needed but so far I haven't seen any need for so much memory.

Thanks, - Alex

I don't know what would be causing the problem you had with the first Ubuntu VM. Maybe your virtual drive is full. Certainly not the RAM if you have 16GB. I run it without problems on a machine with 2GB RAM.
