Unfortunately it apparently does not work. As far as I can tell, Firefox only syncs to additional DEVICES, such as phones & tablets. I could find no instance where FF would sync a user's vital profile/password info to the cloud in order to port it to another installation of Firefox. Apparently, sync is only for syncing up different devices and will not serve as a replacement for the missing Firefox import/export function (even for porting it's own data to itself, should you get a new machine).
