Start by unpacking the tar file...

tar -xvf file.tar
Once you have the tar file unpacked there should be a "configure" file that get unpacked. Cd into the directory where you unpacked the tar file and run...

This will check your systems settings to make sure you can compile the source and that you have all of the dependencies required. If you get any errors you will be told what libraries you need to resolve the dependencies. After a successful ./configure all you need to do is...

make install
This will compile all of your source code. After that you should be all ready to roll. I hope this helps!!
