install SuSE 10 on top of SuSE 9

I have a dual boot system runing both Windows 2003 and SuSE 9 Sp1. I would like to install SuSE 10 on the partition of the existing SuSE 9, how do I do that? Is it possible that I still can keep the data under /usr after installing SuSE 10?

No, the SUSE 10 install disk will reformat the partition deleting everything you have.

If you want to keep /usr, I would suggest either backing up all your /usr data or consider creating a new partition. If you create a new partition, you could delete everything on your SuSE 9 except for /usr, then move everything in /usr directory up one level into the / directory. Once that is done, you can install SUSE 10 to your new partition, and mount your old SuSE 9 partition as /usr.

You have the choice of "new" and "upgrade" installs with SUSE 10.0. (I am not so sure regarding 10.1 though, since I have not used it.) I suspect that upgrade should do the trick, but take a little time to search and make sure. Of course, you need to back up your files and so forth just in case something goes wrong (power failure, etc.).
