install sound server

Ladies & Gents,

I am trying to add an audio service to a headless server to play audio notification files at specific times. But it seams that I don't have a sound server installed on the machine because mpg123 outputs no sound. What is the lightest sound server I can install called? There is no gui and I don't want one to be pulled in by depends.

The system is Debian Squeeze (old stable).

Why not use sox? It has a nice little command called "play".

Thanks sag47

~:$ locate play

~:$ man play
~:$ No manual entry for play

There is not a "play" package in my repos unless you mean playmidi which does not play mp3 and audio streams off a media server.

Duh, color me stupid. Completely missed "sox"

I did a little looking and I think I need to install alsa. This machine was a very striped down install originally.
