install redhat under xp
 

hi guys

i hav a pc with 40 GB hdd, it's 2 partitions each 1 is 20 GB , i want to install redhat enterprise 4 , xp is installed on partition c so i definately hav to install redhat on d but i'm not sure how this is goin to work, cuz i know that redhat requires at least 2 partitions , is it possible to partition d into other 2 partitions without affecting c, or should i format the whole disk and repartition it again into 3 parts c d e , cuz i dont know it looks stupid if i ever logged in to xp and saw a regular partition (linux swap) with the size of 512 MB, so plz somebody tell me what to do with the least loss.

you can delete a partition and create new ones in it's place during the install, certainly. but please don't call them c, d and e under linux, that means nothing there, you will NOT have a d and e partition at all, you'd have /dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3 possibly.

why delete if you can just resize and move partitions?

Delete D:\
Install Redhat to free space.
Give 1 to 2 times RAM for /swap, and the rest to /.

FIRST--make sure any important data is backed up.

You can simply delete D:\ IF YOU DON'T NEED IT--Other wise you need to resize it (and maybe resize C:\ as well) One way or another, you need to create ~5GB of empty space.

The partitioning tools included in many Linux installers do not allow re-sizing of partitions, so you need something like GParted, QTparted, Partition Magic, etc.
