Angry install problems - make files

I'm pretty new to linux, so I've been spending a lot of time trying to get random stuff to work. One problem I keep having is using make. I run ./configure, and everything goes well, but then when I just type "make", it says:

make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

There are two files that I think would be relevant:

Am I missing something? Is something not working right?

Iirc, when you run ./configure a file named Makefile is created by a program called automake (called by ./configure) that reads (and and uses the information to generate Makefile.

Are you able to compile anything, or is it a specific package that's giving you trouble.
