install printer on PCLinuxOS 2007 version

I have an HP 6540 deskjet printer. It used to work on my Linux computer. I had the new operating system installed and now need to reinstall the printer. I can't find directions online or it is hard to understand. I am not a programmer. Please help.

check dmesg to see if the printer is recognised first then have a look at

http://openprinting.org/show_printer...P-DeskJet_6540

download the ppd file and then google for how to set up CUPS and use the downloaded ppd file.

PCLinuxOS uses the Mandriva Control Center to configure hardware and other settings. Go to the Menu -> System and look for an icon that says "Configure You computer" or something similar. When the application runs, look for the hardware section and then click on the option to manage printers. You should see a an option to add a printer to your system.

HP printer installation on PCLinuxOS 2007

I have CUPS installed and everything looks fine, to my knowledge. I try to print and nothing happens. I am sure I have the cords plugged in correctly. I think the USB cable looks good. What else is there? Tell me more about the driver. What should be listed there?

Thanks for all of your support. Please respond.
